It has been announced that Professor Steve Young is to be awarded the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) Medal for Scientific Achievement, the most prestigious ISCA award which is given to the most distinguished researchers in the field of Spoken Language Processing.
Professor Young is well known for major contributions to the theory and practice of speech recognition systems, along with his more recent work on applying statistical modelling approaches to spoken dialogue systems. The ISCA medal will be presented at the Interspeech 2010 conference to be held next September in Makuhari, Japan and at which Professor Young will give the opening Keynote Address.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) announced that Professor Young has received IEEE Fellow status - the highest category of IEEE membership - "for contributions to speech processing, speech recognition and spoken dialogue systems". He also received a prestigious Technical Achievement Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2004.
Professor Young has recently taken up the role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Planning and Resources in the University, but still maintains an active research group.
