Exploring Innovation in Aerospace

What drew you to this placement?

I wanted to experience working in an aerospace engineering company at the forefront of innovation and growth, and see how different technologies, such as additive manufacturing, are explored to promote this. Rolls-Royce’s reputation for revolution and the chance to contribute to real-world projects made it a perfect fit.

What did you work on?

I wrote a Directed Energy Deposition Design and Process Guide, a resource to support engineers across the company. I also completed the Additive Academy to develop my CAD and simulation skills, and organised supplier visits and networking sessions to understand how Rolls-Royce works as both an engineering company and a business.

What did you learn?

  • How to use NX CAD and apply Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) principles.
  • The importance of balancing technical capability with cost, performance, and supplier relationships.
  • Professional skills in networking, presenting, and seeking feedback effectively.

What surprised you?

I was surprised by how much initiative interns are trusted with. I expected to just support ongoing work, but instead I led visits, delivered a company-wide technical guide, and interacted with senior engineers and managers.

Your proudest moment?

Presenting my finished DED Guide to a panel of global ALM specialists; knowing it will continue to be used across Rolls-Royce was incredibly rewarding.

How has this shaped your future?

This placement confirmed my passion for working in a large aerospace company like Rolls Royce. It has made me more confident in tackling open-ended projects and motivated me to pursue a career where I can combine technical design with strategic thinking.

One piece of advice for future students?

Say yes to every opportunity — from site visits to networking chats. The unplanned conversations and experiences often teach you the most and help you see the bigger picture.
