The Engineering Library Team - Siân Owen, Daniele Campelo, Eleanor Barker, John Clarke, Lizzie Sparrow and River Cronin - won the category of 'Creating an Inclusive and Welcoming Community' in The Professional Services Awards 2025. The awards celebrate the best work to support research and education across the University of Cambridge.
Multiple nominations were received in support of the team for its cultivation of an inclusive, warm and welcoming environment in the Engineering Library for students and staff.
The judges commented: “The wealth of support provided to the team's nominations is a testament to the work they are doing, and how truly valued it is by their colleagues and students.”
Highlights included the well-thought-out book displays for awareness days, raising awareness of issues like dementia and Alzheimer’s and even crocheting study-buddies.
Senior library assistant John Clarke, on behalf of the library team, said: “We were overwhelmed to receive multiple nominations, including from School of Technology and Department staff leaders.
“We would like to thank everyone who put our names forward and for their kind words. After gathering a wealth of student support over the years, receiving the warm backing of colleagues means just as much.
“We humbly stand on the shoulders of giants and have a huge support network behind us that includes the absolutely fabulous people who took the time to nominate us. It empowers us to continue to keep making a positive impact at the Department of Engineering.”
Professor of Superconductor Engineering John Durrell was one of the people who nominated the team for the award.
He said: "I am delighted that the library team has been recognised with the Team Professional Services Award for creating a welcoming and inclusive community.
“The team has consistently gone far beyond any reasonable expectations in cultivating an inclusive, warm, and welcoming environment for both students and staff. Through a thoughtful blend of creativity, compassion, and community, they have created a library space of belonging and engagement."
Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice said at the awards ceremony: “We recognise the ways you’ve gone above and beyond to support your colleagues, our students and researchers.”
She added: “Our mission speaks of excellence, but excellence is never a fixed point or a single achievement. It is a journey, renewed every day through the collective efforts of our community – through people like you, who bring energy, ideas and often a fair amount of resilience to make sure that we can keep our academic mission going strong.
“Your work matters deeply, and we are proud to count you among our Cambridge community.”
And the library team wishes everyone a good holiday for the end of 2025.
“Have a lovely, festive break and we look forward to seeing you all in 2026,” they said.
