Many congratulations to Professor Norman Fleck, one of 44 new Fellows from the fields of science, engineering and technology to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 27 May 2004. Professor Fleck is one of nine University staff to have recently become Fellows.
Professor Fleck's citation states that "He is a world leader in the field of the micro-mechanics of solids. He combines a deep understanding of materials and their behaviour with exceptional strength in mechanics, modelling and computational methods".
Fellows are elected for their contributions to science, both in fundamental research resulting in greater understanding, and also in leading and directing scientific and technological progress in industry and research establishments. A maximum of 44 new Fellows, who must be citizens or residents of Commonwealth countries or Ireland, may be elected annually.
